Provided construction management, inspection, and documentation services for the rehabilitation of the Homestead Grays Bridge, a 3,102-ft structure originally constructed in 1936 that had become structurally deficient to handle the 41,000 cars per day that now travel on its surface. The project involved widening of the roadway surface, replacing existing sidewalks, installing new highway lighting, and completely repainting the superstructure.
The bridge consists of 17 spans, seven are simple spans with steel girders and ten spans consist of a continuous Wichert Truss. Repairs included replacing 1.6 million pounds of structural steel, placement of 5,000 tons of Superpave Asphalt, and the painting of 1 million sf of existing steel. dck worldwide employees were also challenged with maintaining traffic flow on the bridge and to a nearby busy new shopping complex while performing the work.
