Design-build contractor for this new state-of-the-art correctional facility. Situated in an area that is home to some of the most notable racing stables in America, this 427,000 square-foot facility was designed to resemble one of the barns typical of the area that houses the thoroughbred racehorses. Also, to help screen the majority of the prison complex from the highway, the facility was uniquely designed to incorporate below-grade housing.
As design-build contractor, we purchased and erected the structural steel for the administration building package which consisted of a 750-ton steel frame, 100,000 sf of floor deck, and 28,000 sf of roof deck. A steep gable roof frame with dormers, skylights, and an 18’ x 18’ hexagonal cupola in the center of the roof was also constructed to give the facility the barn-like exterior.
This project was awarded the 2001 Project of the Year Award, Building Category, from the American Public Works Association, Kentucky Chapter.
