dck worldwide was selected by Walgreens to perform design-assist services to construct their first Flagship store in Hawaii. Unlike Walgreens’ traditional drugstores, the Flagship stores reflect their transformation into a retail health and daily living destination. The new multistory structural steel framed retail store includes 35,900 square-feet of total floor area supported by a cast-in-place concrete deep foundation system. The building’s oblique structural frame is enclosed with an exterior glazed aluminum curtain wall system combined with sections of aluminum composite panels and decorative aluminum plate panels. The project includes an attached 3-1/2 level, 55,000 square-foot cast-in-place concrete parking structure to accommodate 72 vehicles. The retail facility is bound by concrete-paved setbacks and landscaping as part of the project’s site improvements. dck worldwide’s collaboration with all stakeholders was essential for the project’s success considering Walgreens had never before undertaken a Design-Assist process to build one of its stores. Starting with the preconstruction phase, dck worldwide led a proactive effort to identify and propose value engineering solutions for consideration to control cost and preserve Walgreens’ budget. Feasibility was achieved across a broad range of disciplines along with innovative construction methods and solutions to realize value engineered cost savings totaling nearly $4 million. Walgreens was extremely pleased with the overall level of design efficiency and quality of work that provided great value to all stakeholders.
